Title Year Director Your thoughts Votes
The Sentimental Bloke 1919 Raymond Longford C.J. Dennis is in the movie. The best Australian silent film ever, and arguably the best Aussie film ever, but this generation wouldn't know it even existed. 2
40,000 Horsemen 1940 Charles Chauvel 7
The Overlanders 1946 Harry Watt 3
Bush Christmas 1947 Ralph Smart Great kids film 3
Sons of Matthew 1949 Charles Chauvel Typified early Australians struggling on the land. 0
The Back of Beyond 1954 John Heyer Best of any outback film 1
Jedda 1955 Charles Chauvel Set in the NT, the first film to star Aboriginal actors, given top billing over white players. Intense and beautiful, it raises issues just as relevant today. A groundbreaking film. 2
Smiley 1956 Anthony Kimmins Probably corny by today's standards but it is the only Australian movie that I remember fondly. I would like to see it again. 4
On the Beach 1959 Stanley Kramer Set in Melbourne, On The Beach is a story about civilisation coming to grips with the end of the world after nuclear war. 2
They're a Weird Mob 1966 Michael Powell The Film that showed Australians what we looked like to the World. A brilliant angle to our culture despite many cringing it was and in some ways still is current. 5
Ned Kelly 1970 Tony Richardson Mick Jagger took time in the prime years of The Rolling Stones to give a credible performance as Ned Kelly. 0
Don's Party 1971 Bruce Beresford 5
Walkabout 1971 Nicolas Roeg 20
Wake In Fright 1971 Ted Kotcheff Wake In Fright is a cutting edge film depicting real Australian characters in the isolated outback. It has great acting and amazing scenes and is somewhat of an educative social study of it's time. Absolutely brilliant. 32
The Adventures of Barry McKenzie 1972 Bruce Beresford A staple of the Oz boy in search of his 'roots'. 9
Alvin Purple 1973 Tim Burstall 5
Dalmas 1973 Bert Deling By far the most interesting Australian film I have seen. 0
Stone 1974 Sandy Harbutt 5
The Cars That Ate Paris 1974 Peter Weir Great debut feature from a fine director. Without Cars there would be no Mad Max. 9
Alvin Rides Again 1974 David Bilcock, Robin Copping I actually enjoyed this movie more than Alvin Purple. I would have love to drop into that Road House Abigail was serving in. Well she was married to Mauri Fields who can blame her. 0
