Title Year Director Your thoughts Votes
Dalmas 1973 Bert Deling By far the most interesting Australian film I have seen. 0
Heat Wave 1982 Phillip Noyce This was the first Australian film to realistically depict Australian urban life. There is no romanticizing or cliche ridden resorting to "Aussie" symbols. No kangaroos. No drovers. It's tightly directed, starkly funny and a thrilling plot. 0
Houseboat Horror 1989 Kendal Flanagan, Ollie Martin Unquestionably Australia's finest slasher flick, with command performances from an ensemble cast including Alan Dale, Gavin Wood and John Michael "Hollywood" Howson. 4
Long Weekend 1978 Colin Eggleston If you like John Hargreaves' knock-around-aussie-bloke routine, this is a must. B grade but strangely unnerving in a Hanging Rock kind of way. 0
Alisons Birthday 1979 Ian Coughlan Australia's scariest film.... 0
Sons of Matthew 1949 Charles Chauvel Typified early Australians struggling on the land. 0
Hercules Returns 1993 David Parker Australian comedy cult classic. How is it not on the list already??? 5
Struck by Lightning 1990 Jerzy Domaradzki This film never quite got the publicity it deserved. I believe it was released about the time of Crocodile Dundee. But it is a wonderful story that encompasses several social areas with some brilliant acting. Starring Garry McDonald. It is worthy of recognition. 0
The Picture Show Man 1977 John Power 2
Bush Fire Moon 1987 George Miller Great Australian movie about harsh times living in the bush. 2
Bedevil 1993 Tracey Moffatt Anglo-Aboriginal Australian magical realism "These stories are told via a playful bending and blending of generic conventions which provides a meta-narrative of how indigenous and non-indigenous Australians understand and live with each other." 0
Annie's Coming Out 1984 Gil Brealey AFI best movie 1984 0
The Getting of Wisdom 1978 Bruce Beresford 0
Tim 1979 Michael Pate 0
In Search of Anna 1978 Esben Storm This is a road trip that shifts time from past to present to unfold the story in a non linear fashion. It had a memorable soundtrack, beautiful images of Australia as they followed the Pacific Highway and it stood out from the usual period pieces of the time. I wish it were released on DVD but as it was never a box office 'hit' I doubt it will ever be. 1
Mouth to Mouth 1978 John Duigan It was a good cult movie 0
Travelling North 1987 Carl Schultz Brilliant evocation of old bufferdom 0
The Coolangatta Gold 1984 Igor Auzins 1
Ground Zero 1987 Bruce Myles, Michael Pattinson Interesting story as it portrays the secrecy and cover-up of issues concerned with nuclear testing in Australia. 0
Manganinnie 1980 John Honey Satisfies all the senses and tears at your heart...features the most beautiful place in the world on the east coast of Tasmania, and the melancholy cello of Peter Sculthorpe. A bleak and sad story. 0
